Biography
Elected District 5 Commissioner in 2006 in a special election, Commissioner Lee May is
the youngest person in the history of DeKalb County Government to serve on the Board of Commissioners.
As a Commissioner, May oversees a $625 million budget and serves as the voice for nearly 160,000 residents
located in the heart of one of the most affluent African-American communities in the country. May campaigned
on a platform to address the concerns of the people and he stands on a promise to make a positive impact in
his community.
With less than a year in office, he has been able to work across party lines to bring the highest
level of services to the residents of his district. From infrastructure improvements to public safety,
May has made a noticeable difference throughout the 5th Commission District.
Prior to joining the Board of Commissioners, May played an active role in the local political arena
by serving as an active member of the Democratic Party, State Senate District 55 Advisory Council and NAACP.
A 1998 honors graduate of the historic Clark Atlanta University, May also obtained a Master’s of
Divinity Degree from the prestigious Emory University. As a business major and marketing minor at
Clark-Atlanta University, May gained valuable knowledge about the latest industry techniques and trends.
He would go on to work for Nestle USA and serve as a Public Affairs Manager for the Edison Group - a
grassroots communications firm based in Atlanta.
In 2005, May became the owner of the Cinefé Movie Theatre in Lithonia. As an entrepreneur, this
endeavor made him one of the youngest theatre owners in the country and one of three African-American
movie theatre owners in the nation.
He currently serves on the Board of Commissioners Audit & Contract and Economic Development
Committees. He is also an active member of the Young Elected Officials Network, DeKalb County
Community Service Board, National Association of Counties and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
May also serves as the youngest ordained Elder at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church under the
leadership of Bishop Eddie L. Long.
May is married to wife Robin of 5 years and is father to daughter Ryann Kimberly.
